In October, 30 volunteer firefighters attended a combined rescue training on Hyland Hill. Joining the Westmoreland team were firefighters from Spofford and Chesterfield. Many different types of equipment were used during this training including Spofford’s airbags which are used for stabilizing and lifting objects. Westmoreland’s low angle rescue equipment was also used during the training. This equipment, which includes ropes and pulleys, is used for hauling people up low grade hills. The command structure for the drill focused on accountability and the use of the National Incident Command System.
Recently the Westmoreland Department offered training on the pumper engines and tanker trucks. They also worked with the carbon monoxide meter and how to identify and treat carbon monoxide poisoning. Rounding off their experience was a review of options for extinguishing chimney fires as the winter months approach.
The department is in the process of upgrading the defibrillator to a biphasic version. To the lay person, it means that the patients will receive a more effective shock. This upgrade also brings the town in line with the current American Heart Association’s standards. This generous gift was made possible by a donation from the late Cathrine Steinheuser.
In the upcoming weeks mark your calendars for the following meetings:
Fire training on December 16th at 7 P.M. Regular meeting to follow at 8 P.M.
Rescue training on January 6th at 7 P.M. The training will include a practice for the N.H.

If you’re looking for a way to become an active member of your community, consider joining the volunteer fire department and make a difference in our town!
