There are many things about growing up in Westmoreland that I miss, not the least of which were the carefree summer days of Old Home Days in town. Over the years I have tossed it around in my mind to resurrect that tradition – but life always seemed to make the idea take a backseat. Then I heard Mr. Hayward, our principal, mention that a few people in town were investigating starting it up again. There were rumors of a committee, and that they had some ideas in the works.

Then I got a telephone call from Nancy Sandahl last week confirming my hopes. There were some people talking about bringing back The Days. These people had formed a committee. They had even set a date. YES!

This group of passionate Westmorelanders have tentatively set a date in the middle of August to bring back the timeless tradition of celebrating our town. A long list of activities they have already planned include:
*”Westmoreland’s Got Talent” Show
*5K Roadrace
*Craft show
*Parade
*Lunch at Fellowship Hall
*Tug-o-war (I remember always being glad that the Simino boys were on MY side of the rope!!)
*The famous Married vs. Single softball game
*Reunion of Alumnae at the school
*Pictures for children with neat/antique cars
*Horse Shoes
*Golf Tourney at Spofford
*Tennis Tourney
*Delicious Ham and Bean Supper
*Saturday Evening Dance
*Sunday Pancake Breakfast
*Church Service
*Possible Garden Tour
*Concert by the famous Westmoreland Town Band

As Nancy read the list that the committee had already organized – to say that I was excited and nostalgic would be an understatement. This group has been busy already; as you can tell by the long list of activities planned. They have comprised a weekend of items from our past, mingled with some new and creative ideas to bring in the younger generation.

Their efforts should be applauded and supported. As with any program, it takes time and energy to put a weekend like this on. They need a few good women and men to help bring this tradition back. I, for one, will roll up my sleeves to bring back the memories and help create new ones for my own children. I hope that you find it in yourselves to do the same.

Keep your eyes posted to the website for the next meeting and committee members whom you can contact to help.
